Treating Sciatica with Chinese Medicine

Treating Sciatica with Chinese Medicine

Sciatica is a condition that is characterized by shooting pain that goes down the leg and can also present with low back pain.  These symptoms can occur more frequently with certain movements.  Sciatica is a painful condition that can, in most cases, be significantly minimized or fully relieved by acupuncture treatments, as well as by Tui-na (a Chinese style of therapeutic massage).  If you are suffering from this ailment don’t wait to get a treatment!  The longer a person has had sciatica, the longer it will take to fully treat this condition.

Some key lifestyle alterations should be made if experiencing sciatica:

It is very important to not wear heels, because even a small heel will tend to intensify sciatica.
Carrying heavy objects will exacerbate sciatica.  This is especially true if heavy objects are carried on the back and/or when walking up hills or steps.
Doing twist (aka: yoga twisting positions, playing golf, etc) should be avoided.  Twists can inflame a sciatic type condition.
Be sure to consume the proper amounts of necessary vitamins and minerals, especially: calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

Acupuncture and Tui-na massage treatments can help to treat sciatica in the acute and chronic stage, and can also act as a preventative measure if you are prone to this syndrome.
